VFC is one of my favorite brands for top-tier AEGs, particularly the M4. I like them because the performance out of the box is always efficient and smooth. The gun, inside and out, has very good tolerances, so it feels put together well, no matter what part. The gun uses almost all common parts available, so if you need to upgrade or repair anything, everything should fit easily.
When looking at a high-end AEG, you could stack this up easily against an ICS or Krytac. Each proline AEG will have its quirks, but performance among the best of each brand will be very similar, so you should choose based on the features you like and what you intend to do with it. The VFC SOPMOD is a great example of their quality. VFC stands for Vega Force Company, and they are brought to us in the US by Umarex/Elite Force.
The VFC we are looking at today is the newest version of the Block 2 SOPMOD. This particular look is not new by any means, so I will go over the new stuff first, which lies inside VFC’s internals and has undergone numerous evolutions, and this is noted by the code name Avalon. The Avalon gearboxes feature tight tolerances, excellent compression, and a really good rate of fire and trigger response out of the box. Avalon gearboxes are among the first from VFC to feature a built-in MOSFET. MOSFETs are electronic chips that improve trigger response and extend the life of the trigger contacts, which is a wear item inside the gearbox.
MOSFETs do this by supplying power directly through the motor and relying on the switch assembly to only function as a signal to turn that motor. When the trigger is pulled, the assembly will flow electricity from the battery to the motor on a conventional switch. This works fine when it comes down to it, but it is inefficient and can eventually cause the trigger contacts to burn out. The incorporation of MOSFET technology in airsoft guns heralds a new era of performance and durability for airsoft motors. This advancement enhances the immediate user experience by improving trigger response and safeguards the longevity of the gun's internal components. The VFC SOPMOD, with its advanced Avalon internals, is a testament to these improvements.
Many high voltage battery usage and semi-auto burn these out sooner and require a full teardown of the gun to replace. The gearbox features a quick-change spring guide, allowing you to change your spring rates after some disassembly. It is not the easiest by any means, but many quick-change spring systems are the same in terms of difficulty. The barrel is a 6.03mm tight bore, so you will already be quite accurate out of the box. These are high-quality barrels, so unless you have a particular other brand you have a preference for, I’d say this one is good to go out of the box. The VFC SOPMOD also features these enhancements, making it a reliable and accurate choice for airsoft enthusiasts.
Now, coming back to the outside, this rifle is modeled after the Block 2 revision of the M4 carbine carried by special operations in the United States military. Regarding the rifle, this would entail a base M4 using a Daniel Defense M4A1 RIS. Great attention was paid to the anodizing and the little details that make the DD rail system so popular. Older aftermarket rail systems didn’t always get the color right, but compared to this real one, they are identical. The rail system might weigh more than many cool guy high-speed M4s, but the military chose this because it is rigid, which is important for mounting accessories such as lasers.
The fit and finish on the body is superb, and the tolerances are always precise. I could slap on my older VFC upper here with no problems. Sometimes, the lower-tier brands that make metal guns of lower quality will be all over the place in terms of tolerance and fitment, and you would often think the guns were made from two different factories. That is not the case here.
The gun shoots nice and crisp at the upper limits for outdoor use. I want to stress that this gun operates smoothly and efficiently. Everything feels like a well-tuned machine. The rate of fire is an effortless mid-20 rounds per second. I would recommend, at a minimum, using .25, but .28’s would do better in this rifle.
This AEG best suits the milsim-type player looking to build a particular loadout around the gun. This comes with the best version of its gearbox ever and should provide you with everything you need in the performance category. It is a solid buy for people who want something that works well out of the box and doesn’t want to mess with anything. If you're going to change some random things for personal preference, you could also certainly do that here, which is the appeal of the VFCs since they make all their parts fit normal specs. The VFC SOPMOD, with its refined features, is a great and dependable choice because rather than reinventing the wheel, VFC refines what they are doing with each new model.
